Educators across Providence Public Schools (PPSD) have worked together to build shared systems and stronger instructional practices by aligning curriculum, developing more consistent approaches to teaching and learning, and creating a professional culture where they can learn from one another and take collective responsibility for student success. Today, the city’s educators are collecting and using data to guide action, respond to student needs, and strengthen instruction in real time. As a result, classrooms have transformed, illustrating the impact of creating the conditions for teachers to grow together, lead change, and improve outcomes for every student.
Educator Recruitment
PPSD is expanding its reach to attract talented educators from across the country and around the world. Through initiatives such as the International Teacher Program, Teach For America, and a partnership with the Embassy of Spain, the district is bringing diverse perspectives and expertise into its schools. These efforts help ensure students have access to highly qualified educators while strengthening the district’s ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
Building from Within
PPSD is investing in future teachers by creating clear pathways into the profession for aspiring and current educators. Through programs such as the Substitute-to-Teacher Residency, Teaching Assistant certification pathways, and partnerships with local colleges and universities, the district helps individuals gain the training, experience, and support needed to become certified educators. The first three Grow Your Own graduates were hired as teachers for next year.
Hiring Practices
PPSD has refined and strengthened its hiring practices and human resources systems to better attract and retain top-tier educators. By adjusting hiring timelines and working closely with union partners, the district is now able to fill critical positions earlier and ensure schools are fully staffed long before the start of the school year.
High-Need Positions
To address the challenge of filling hard-to-staff positions, PPSD provides financial assistance and personalized support to educators to help them complete certification programs. As a result, more of the district’s educators are certified to teach Emergent Bilingual Learners and students with special needs, expanding access to the specialized supports that some of the city’s students need to succeed.
Professional Learning
PPSD provides a variety of professional learning opportunities to help the city’s educators strengthen their instructional practices and effectively use new materials. Instructional coaches also work alongside teachers to model lessons, support planning, and provide real-time feedback. Together, these supports help educators continue to strengthen and improve their practice and deliver the highest quality instruction to all students.
Using Data
PPSD has transformed the way it uses data to drive instruction and improvement. By integrating academic, attendance, staffing, and operational information into a centralized dashboard, district leaders and educators now have easy access to real-time insights that help them identify needs, target support, and monitor progress. Weekly data reviews and reports create a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, ensuring decisions are informed by evidence and focused on improving outcomes for students.
Award-Winning Educators
PPSD is home to a growing number of educators and leaders who are being publicly recognized for their excellence and commitment to educational equity. In addition to state and local honors, in 2026 Superintendent Javier Montañez received the Family Engagement Changemaker Award from the National School Superintendents Association for his commitment to maintaining meaningful school-family relationships. These educators are helping to create a growing sense of community where students and families feel welcomed, valued, and connected.
